Today Traivel takes you to discover Porta Rudiae: history and symbol of Lecce
Porta Rudiae stands out as the oldest and most fascinating gate in Lecce, located in the eastern part of the city along Via Adua, between Viale dell'Università and Via Dalmazio Birago.
This monument, rich in history and unique features, takes its name from the ancient Messapian city of Rudiae.
Like Porta Napoli, Porta Rudiae also appears to have been built over an ancient medieval gate, which collapsed at the end of the 17th century.
Also known as Porta di Sant'Oronzo, it was rebuilt in 1703 by Prospero Lubelli, as attested by a Latin inscription. Characterized by a distinct Baroque style, it features a single central arch, flanked by two columns on pedestals, topped by a frieze decorated with busts of the legendary founders of the city: Malennio, Dauno, Euippa, and Idomeneo.
The facade is dominated by the statue of Sant'Oronzo, flanked by the figures of Saint Irene and Saint Dominic.
