Welcome to this journey through time! Charles V Castle, located in the vibrant heart of Lecce, is much more than just a fortress. It’s a fascinating witness to centuries of history, power, and architectural transformations.
Its roots trace back to the 12th century, as evidenced by the excavations in the inner courtyard. Originally, it served as the fortified residence of the Counts of Lecce during the Norman era. The core of the medieval castle evolved around the "Maestra" and "Mozza" towers, still visible today. Excavations have unearthed wall structures dating back to the Altavilla period, a testament to the castle's early phases. Subsequently, it passed to the Enghien and Orsini del Balzo families, who ruled over Lecce.
The castle's current appearance is the result of the radical renovation commissioned by Charles V in the 16th century, starting in 1537. The emperor transformed the manor into a modern fortress, a tangible symbol of his power. It was expanded, incorporating the pre-existing medieval structure, with the addition of new defensive walls and four imposing bastions. In the Maria d'Enghien Hall, you can admire the coat of arms of Viceroy Pietro de Toledo, an official loyal to Charles V. The castle and the city of Lecce were thus equipped with a state-of-the-art defense system.
